Have you been to a skate park lately?
No rules. No parents. No coach.
And unbelievable athletic performance.
Kids, who are unsupervised, (how can that be?) will work on
skills and tricks over and over, and then over some more, until
they get it. Then on to the next one, or next level. All on
their own. They can accomplish what we never would
dream of. Why? Because we aren't there telling them what
they should or shouldn't do, or telling them the "right" way to
do something.
Studies done by associates of the Institute For Play show that
children of all ages will naturally gravitate towards the next
harder puzzle of what they can easily do. Children
have an innate desire to learn and be
challenged. It is only later on in life, usually modeled by
adults, that we learn how to give up and throw in the towel.
