We like to organize things.  We think we're good at it.
We think it's what kids need.  Bob Bigelow, author of
Just Let The
Kids Play
, told me once that if we brilliant adults figured out that tag
was a good cardiovascular and agility sport, that we would create tag
leagues.  And since some kids would be better than others, we would
create elite or travel tag teams.  Then Nike would make tag shoes
and tag apparel, and tag bags to hold all the stuff.  Then Fox or
ESPN would broadcast the
World Series of Tag.  And
we would crown the world's best fourth
graders at tag!

You snicker and laugh.  But there is a strong truth to that.  We
adults think that without adult, and usually
aggressive, supervision that kids will just
mess around.
